| Wen Pei Low is a visual artist, writer, singer-songwriter and event producer based between stolen Gadigal Land and Singapore. She works across performance, writing, textiles and vocalization, with poetry and ritual being grounding themes in her work. Completing an undergraduate degree in Art Theory at UNSW in 2024 with an interest in sound art and currently enrolled in BFA (Honours) in Studio Practice at UNSW as well, Wen Pei has grown to be deeply passionate about catalyzing her sensitivity for purposes larger than herself through her practice. In recent projects and looking into the near future, she has been most urgently concerned with creating an impact at the intersection of artistic and medical research, based on personal experience with illness as a child and its impacts in adulthood. She intends to pursue studies in art therapy at La Trobe University and the University of Melbourne from 2026 onwards so that she may specialise in dynamic forms of creative art therapy, and utilize her expertise to contribute towards public health art programs across so-called Australia to fill gaps in community areas where CaRM and or CALD Disabled and Sick persons are overlooked. Over the last five years, Wen Pei has performed at Carriageworks, Esplanade Singapore, composed and performed for award winning short films, and her writing has been published in un Magazine. Wen Pei was also awarded the Randwick Women's Art Prize 1st Place (Local) in 2025 with a text based work. @_waterclover |
CHUAN ZHEN, 穿针: To thread a needle, 穿: to wear, 针: needle.
Emerging from the artist's lived experience with a cycle of egg-freezing in early 2025 due to past illness, CHUAN ZHEN is a striking and realistically grounded snapshot of complex medical trauma, decision making in relation to invasive treatment and its after effects.
Large photographic prints depict medical paraphernalia used during preparation for the egg collection process, videos show the artist threading textile needles through the same medical paraphernalia to create sculptural forms, and the soundscape playing in the installation is a result of amplifying, manipulating and looping sounds produced during this process.
True to Wen Pei's practice that is deeply time sensitive and grounded, these artistic resolutions that are ritualistic, meditative, and embodied in nature are reflections of Wen Pei's attempt to process the traumatic reality they were living through while being enrolled in an art school program that required intensive art-making and development week to week, which is the context in which the work was developed.
Through looming repetition and rhythm of sound produced by medical material, enlarged imagery of needles, medical text and the presence of the artist's body and lived experience, CHUAN ZHEN leads from the intentional parallel between the textile and medical needle, and takes viewers into a space beyond it - into deep reflection about artistic therapeutic processes where conversations about the work are ever-changing in nourishing and generative ways.
